The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) Grade Seven results for Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South provinces have revealed that girls performed better than boys in 2010.
In Bulawayo, 92 girls got four units while 32 boys got the same results while Matabeleland North saw 63 percent girls passing while 37 percent of the boys who sat for the examination made it.
"We are very much worried about the boys and something must be done to ensure they balance the scale," said Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director (PED) Mrs Boithatelo Mnguni in an interview yesterday.
She said although there were lesser boys sitting for the examinations, the pass rate remained low.
"I know there are many girls writing the examinations than boys but more should be doe to elevate the boys to better pass marks," said Mrs. Mnguni.
She said the overall pass in her province stood at 14 percent up from 11.
"We had better quality percentage passes this year and this means we had more pupils who got six units and below per subject this time around," said Mrs. Mnguni.
"This is a great achievement for the province given the resources that we had and we are happy."
She said they hoped to improve from last year's pass rate in 2011.
Bulawayo PED MR. Dan Moyo said the Grade Seven overall pass rate stood at 76.9 percent, up from 62 percent the previous year.
"The results are satisfactory and we are very happy with them as they show a marked improvement in the performance of the pupils," said Mr. Moyo.
He said the improvement in the pass rate was attributed to the stability in the economy.
"We had minimal strikes last year, a difference from the previous year whereby we had incessant strikes and other disturbances," said Moyo.
He said they were looking forward to a marked improvement this year.
"We are hoping for an improvement this year as we received consignments of books through the Education Transition Fund (ETF). This will improve the textbook to pupil ratio," said Moyo.
However, there was a two percent decrease in the pass rate from 32 percent in Matabeleland South.
Matabeleland South PED, Mrs Tumisang Thabela attributed the decrease to a lack of resources to improve the quality of education in the province.
She said the pupils in her province performed dismally due to a lack of teaching staff.
"The major cause of the decrease in the pass rate is that there is a shortage of teachers and a lack of supervision of rural schools,: said Mrs Thabela.
She said they anticipate an improvement in the pass rate this year as they received the ETF textbooks early this year.
"We have to wait and see what happens as the textbook to child ratio has improved from last year, although some of the districts such as Bulilima, Mangwe and INsiza are still lagging behind in resources,: said Mrs. Thabela.
