Zapu has distanced itself from a surprise defacing and name change of Robert Mugabe Way in Bulawayo.

The street was 'renamed' Devolution Way with Zapu saying its a reflection that residents are impatient over government's reluctance to implement devolution of power.

According to Zapu regional spokesperson Iphithule Maphosa said it supports the move.

"We are not involved in the plastering of the sign posts. We were thinking that it is the council which has now decided to honour the people's interests and we were applauding it for that," Maphosa said.

"But if it is not the council, it means that has been done by residents who have decided to take responsibility to express their interests through plastering the sign posts since the government seems reluctant to act."

Zapu has also distributed posters calling on government to activate the concept as enshrined in the Constitution.

The posters read: "Zapu demands devolution of power as provided in Chapter 14 of the Zimbabwean Constitution.

There are only two ways about this: either devolution of power or devolution of power. The executive as led by R.G Mugabe, government and Parliament should choose one of these two."
