A 19-year-old-man from Tsholotsho went berserk and doused his wife's lover with petrol before setting him on fire accusing him of wrecking his marriage.
Antony Mlalazi of Ndlovu village in the Nkunzi area in Tsholotsho was on Thursday arraigned before Mberengwa magistrate Mr Tayengwa Sangster facing a charge of attempted murder.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to Thursday and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecuting, Ms Wadzanai Shayanowako told the court that on 17 November, at around 10pm, Mlalazi went to Godknows Moyo's homestead in Village One Koodvale under Chief Maziofa in Mberengwa where he found him asleep with his wife Silindeni Chanhuwa in their bedroom hut.
Ms Shayanowako said Mlalazi had brought a plastic container with petrol which he poured on Moyo through the gap on the thatched roof and set him on fire.
The court heard that Moyo caught fire on the left side of his body but his wife managed to escape and broke the door and stormed outside.
Moyo later escaped and got out of the house but was still engulfed in the flames and sought help from neighbours.
Ms Shayanowako said the bedroom hut was then gutted down by fire while villagers managed to put out fire on Moyo who was now undressed as the clothes had been completely burnt.
As if this was not enough, Mlalazi started throwing stones at Moyo while he was being escorted to Mberengwa District hospital by fellow villagers. He was accusing him of snatching his wife.
"On the way to the bus stop, Mlalazi was throwing stones at Moyo while shouting "udzai imbwa iyo kuti handisati ndatanga, zvandamuita zvishoma," (tell that dog that I'm not finished with him)," said Ms Shayanowako.
Moyo sustained severe injuries and is battling for life at the hospital. The matter was reported to the police leading to Mlalazi's arrest.
