The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has called upon law-makers to review fines for traffic offenders to combat road carnage.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police says the current traffic fines which range from US$5 to US$20, are not deterrent enough, Zbc News reported.

It is against this background that police spokesperson; Chief Superintendent Oliver Mandipaka called for relevant authorities to review the current fines.

Chief Superintendent Mandipaka said the police are using more resources to arrest people for committing various offences, some whose gazzeted fines are way below operational costs.

Last year, Namibia reviewed traffic fines and admission of guilt fines for speeding ranging from 375 to 3000 rand while R4000 is charged for negligence driving.

Drivers operating a cellphone while driving are charged R2000 and failing to stop at a Stop Sign, attracts a fine of R2500 rand.

Observers say Zimbabwe's road carnage statistics are high because the traffic fines are not deterrent enough.
