A MAN (25) from Gweru was dragged to court after he allegedly tried to buy a beer using a defunct Z$5 bearer cheque, claiming it was the new bond note.

Modify Chari of Mkoba 16 suburb in Gweru appeared before Gweru Magistrate Ms Judith Taruvinga facing a fraud charge.

Chari pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to today.

Prosecuting, Ms Senzeni Maphosa told the court that on Tuesday at around 2AM, Moreblessing Mupasu, a bar lady at Bvudzijena Night Club discovered Chari had bought beer using expired currency.

"She was approached by the accused person at the counter who gave her a Z$5 bearer cheque with the serial number AA0803668 and requested to be given a quart of Castle Lager beer.

"The complainant showed him that it was not the new bond note but the accused insisted that it was the new bond note. The accused tried to force the complainant to accept the note and the complainant alerted Mandlenkosi Ncube who is a member of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee to assist her," said Ms Maphosa.

The court heard Ncube arrested Chari and took him to Nehanda Police Station.

"The Z$5 bearer cheque can be produced in court," said Ms Maphosa.
