A 36-year-old ZANU-PF Councillor for Ward 6, Runde Rural District Council, in the Midlands Province has been arrested after he allegedly deposited fake notes amounting to $505 with an EcoCash agent in Bulawayo.

Nomore Nyoni is said to have made a cash-in transaction with Moreblessing Mambara (22), a registered EcoCash agent in Cowdray Park were he gave her fake $500 and a genuine US$5 on September 6.

Nyoni was linked to the fraud case after he was arrested on Friday as an armed robbery suspect.

In January 2015, Nyoni and two other men were arrested for defrauding several Eco-cash agents and supermarkets of $7,500 through depositing counterfeit US dollar notes and using false identity documents.

In September this year, Nyoni was allegedly arrested with $950 in counterfeit notes in Masvingo following a high speed car chase after attempting to cash them in at a supermarket.

He was arrested again for allegedly being part of a syndicate that defrauded EcoCash agents in Hwange, Binga and Victoria Falls of more than $3 000 using fake notes.

Detectives recovered five identification cards, belonging to different people in his possession.
