According to a report by the Sunday Mail Schoolteachers registered with the Zimbabwe Teachers' Association (Zimta) will soon receive motorcycles under a new Motorcycle Loan Scheme.
Prospective beneficiaries will be required to pay a US$200 deposit while a monthly instalment of less than US$100 will be deducted from their salary over 18 months.
The initiative is set to be launched early next year.
Speaking at the Zimta Harare Province Annual General Meeting on Saturday, association president Mrs Tendai Chikowore said the scheme was part of efforts to boost members' morale through non-monetary benefits.
The association boasts a membership of over 40 000 teachers and allied professionals in the education sector.
"We are going to launch the motorcycle loan scheme in collaboration with a reputable manufacturer," she said.
"The value of each of the motorcycles is between US$1 300 and US$1 500. For its part, Zimta will put up a security deposit of between US$125 000 and US$150 000 for every batch of 500 motorcycles collected by members."
Mrs Chikowore - who doubles as chairperson of the Apex Council comprising all civil servant representative bodies - also told the gathering that salary negotiations were likely to be concluded before Christmas.
"I had a meeting with the Minister of Public Service, Ms Lucia Matibenga, a fortnight ago. We agreed the next round of meetings should bring finality to the remuneration problem.
"We also agreed the negotiations should be concluded before we close for Christmas. I believe we should be talking about something else come January."
