TWO Beatrice men who stole a dog from their employer and sold it together with his electrical gadgets were last week slapped with an effective six-month jail term.

The German Shepherd and property were valued at US$1 354.

Shepherd Zimbudzana (20) and his friend Lloyd Kaqui (18) who were employed at Constantia Farm as general hands hatched a plan to steal from their employer since he was not around.

They pleaded not guilty to two counts of theft when they appeared before Chitungwiza resident magistrate Ms Olivia Mariga.

Due to overwhelming evidence, Ms Mariga sentenced Zimbudzana and Kaqui to 12 months in prison but set aside three months for the next five years on condition of good behaviour.

Another three months were suspended on condition they each restitute their employer US$690.

Prosecutor Mr Luke Mutupe said that on November 6 this year, the employer went to Harare to attend a church service, leaving the two at the farm.

When he returned, he asked Zimbudzana and Kaqui about the whereabouts of his dog, but they professed ignorance.

The employer reported the matter to the police after the two broke into his house on November 13 and stole electrical goods and other property.
