Lack of funds in the government coffers is reportedly affecting the review of mental health cases of prisoners amid concerns that those mandated to deal with the cases could not do so if they are not paid their allowances.

This was revealed by a Zanu PF Harare Legislator Terence Mukupe through his Facebook post.

"On location at the Chikurubi female prison with Destiny for Africa Network Social Welfare consultants. Interestingly we have mentally challenged inmates who should have been discharged years ago but have not because the Mental Health Review Tribunal has not been seating because of lack of allowances," Mukupe said.

"It's just not right that these mentally challenged inmates who have been rehabilitated cannot be discharged for years just because there are no allowances for these board members to seat."
