A 59 year old Harare woman is distraught at the justice delivery system and crying foul following the acquittal of a man who allegedly ran over and killed her 42 year old son in the capital whilst driving a commuter omnibus.
The lady has since petitioned Harare Magistrates Court area public prosecutor Mr Jonathan Murombedzi complaining against the judgement and sentence handed to the accused.
For Mrs Victoria Muronzi the 16th day of June 2016 will remain forever a dark day for it is the day when her son Tendai had his life cut short after he was allegedly run over by a kombi driven by one Tariro Chimhene.
The 59 year old mother is visibly in pain at what she perceives as a travesty of justice that transpired since the day she reported the matter to the police and throughout the trial.
She recounted events of the fateful day her son was involved in the alleged hit and run accident and the difficulties she went through to try and get him medical attention before he finally succumbed to the injuries.
While crossing Robert Mugabe at the intersection with Julius Nyerere when Chimhene ran over him resulting in him getting severe injuries, he allegedly sped off the scene and an alert passerby filmed the vehicles registration numbers.
She recounted how she had to go through the difficulties of looking for money for her son's treatment as he had extensive head injuries from the hit and run incident until her son eventually succumbed to the injuries.
Her biggest let down she says is how the trial Magistrate discounted the evidence adduced in court by the witnesses and discharged the accused person at the close of the state case acquitting him from the charge of negligent driving, failure to stop after an accident and failure to report an accident considering her son passed on as a result of the incident.
She says she will stop at nothing to ensure her son gets justice and she has taken the initial step to ensure the wheels of justice move along in a direction that best meets her case.
It waits to be seen whether or not the proceedings were not handled properly after her appeal has been handled.
