The First Secretary of Zanu PF, President Robert Mugabe has once again rebuked bickering over party positions, saying in the revolutionary party leaders are elected by the people on the basis of their track record and performance.

Mugabe made the remarks while addressing members of the Zanu PF Central Committee at the party headquarters in Harare this Wednesday.

As per tradition, the 104th Zanu PF Central Committee meeting was held as a precursor to the 16th annual national people's conference to be held in Masvingo.

Almost all the 300 members of the Central Committee attended the meeting.

Addressing the delegates, Mugabe did not mince his words as he reprimanded some people in leadership positions in the party for failing to demonstrate high levels of discipline and maturity.

He castigated the shameless extent some of them have gone in their quest to position themselves in the party.

"Let us patch up any differences that you might have had and let us go to the conference as a united front," he said.

Mugabe also condemned the imposition of candidates, adding that the revolutionary party needs revolutionary leaders, cadres and members who adhere to the values of the party.

President Mugabe paid tribute to the people of Zimbabwe for remaining steadfast and choosing peace by refusing to bow down to pressure from the country's detractors.

"Zimbabweans showed maturity by ignoring calls for them to participate in demonstrations meant to destabilise the country and ruin the national economy," he said.

President Mugabe concluded his speech by reminding the people to always reflect on the history of the country and how it attained independence before embarking on actions that will destroy all that was fought for.

The theme of this year's conference is: ‘Moving with ZIMASSET in Peace and Unity,' and Mugabe said it must be taken seriously as economic recovery will remain a pipe dream if there is no peace and unity in the country.

Those attending the meeting also took a moment to remember the late Cephas Msipa who was declared a national hero and other provincial and liberation heroes and heroines who have passed on since the last Zanu PF Central Committee meeting held in September.
