A bogus cop Prosper Zengeya (28) was arrested for impersonating a police officer at Mushangashe tollgate in Masvingo on 13 December.
Sources close to investigations allege the bogus cop Zengeya (071879) accompanied by his colleague who identified himself as Mbedzi and a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) to two constables identified as Mutombe and Chingaipe respectively who were on morning shift at Mushangashe tollgate.
Zengeya and Mbezi told the officers on duty that they were on a mission to apprehend gold smugglers who were to pass through the tollgate heading for Zvishavane.
"When the two produced their fake cards the constables on duty believed them and worked together until they knocked off.
The following morning Chingaipe and Mutombe resumed their duty and found the bogus constable Zengeya still on duty whilst Mbedzi was said to have left for Zvishavane.
The two police officers became suspicious and contacted the district operation leading to the subsequent arrest of Zengeya," said the source.
Investigations proved that Zengeya was dismissed from the force in June 2016 for corruption but was still in possession of his police identity card. The identity card has since been confiscated and Zengeya will be charged with impersonating a police officer, peace officer, public officer as defined in section 179 of the criminal code.
The dismissal of corrupt police officers is on the increase. And the Minister of Home Affairs has been on record stating that the force will not hesitate to dismiss rotten apples.
