A soldier based at the 12 Infantry Battalion Barracks Hwange was recently arrested for allegedly stealing a mobile phone at Mpofu Sports bar belonging to a Hwange Local Board employee.
Benson Gwenzi denies the charge and he appeared before Hwange magistrate Rosemary Dube.
The prosecutor Lindiwe Maseko said Gwenzi of 12 Infantry Battalion Barracks, Hwange allegedly stole a mobile phone belonging to Nqobile Mabhena of Empumalanga, Hwange who works at the Hwange Local Board.
Gwenzi was on November 10 at 11pm at Mpofu Sports Bar when Mabhena allegedly requested the bar lady to charge his cellphone and she complied.
Gwenzi later took the cellphone belonging to Mabhena and went away unnoticed. Mabhena later discovered that her cellphone was missing and filed a report to the police.
He later received information that his mobile phone was sold to one Eric Sibanda. Investigations led to Gwenzi's arrest after Sibanda revealed that he bought the mobile phone from Gwenzi.
The mobile phone worth $180 was recovered.
