Zanu PF led government is pushing for the renaming of Harare International International Airport to Robert Mugabe International Airport.

Transport Minister Joram Gumbo disclosed the drive on Friday during the ongoing Zanu PF annual conference in Masvingo.

However, Gumbo gave no specific details during the televised gathering.

Zanu PF functionaries have been clamoring for the renaming on several buildings, streets and towns after liberation hero's.

In the run up to Zanu PF conference last December in Victoria Falls, its Harare provincial leadership resolved that the airport should be named after Mugabe.

Officials said it the suggestion was not new since another airport in Bulawayo is named after the late vice president Joshua Nkomo.

If Gumbo's moved is carried through, this will be the second time the airport will be renamed.

It was originally known as Salisbury Airport but was renamed Harare International Airport after independence in 1980.

The Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Airport was originally known as Bulawayo airport.
