While many have perished on the Beitbridge-Harare road, its state which is also far from enviable has attracted attention from parliament and the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development amid concerns by motorists that potholes are the chief cause of major accidents.
It has not been the best of moments driving along the Beitbridge-Harare road.
Five days ago Tapson Zinyika a cross border driver almost drove his way to demise all because of a pothole.
Other motorists who ply the route have also raised an SOS signal for attention saying the festive season makes their journey even more difficult with the huge flow of traffic.
The road has since been dubbed the 'highway of death'.
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development last week disbursed USD$300 000 to repair the potholes.
The move is timely according to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on transport and infrastructural development which went on a fact finding mission on the highway.
The Mashonaland East road engineer Jaravani Kangara has also given assurance that the task will be completed as soon as possible.
Constructed over 50 years ago, experts say the highway has outlived its lifespan by more than years to date.
The road will undergo major rehabilitation next year with a dualisation project set to take off in earnest in February.
