Four people died on the spot on Monday night when a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck along the Harare-Chirundu Highway.

The accident occurred at the 262km peg around 7:30pm near November Village, Nyamakate area in Makuti.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the driver of a Honda Fit, aged 26, was heading towards Harare from Chirundu with four passengers.

"Upon approaching the 262km peg along the said road, he overtook another vehicle in front of an oncoming Freightliner truck resulting in a head-on collision," she said.

"The vehicle was trapped under the truck. The driver of the Honda Fit and three passengers died on the spot and the bodies were ferried to Karoi District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem."

One passenger from the vehicle escaped with injuries and was taken to Karoi District Hospital for treatment.

"Police would like to urge drivers to exercise caution when driving and to avoid speeding," said Snr Asst Comm Charamba. "Motorists should not endanger other people's lives by taking risks such as overtaking on narrow roads and where visibility is poor."

Police did not reveal the names of the deceased.
