DEFENSE Minister Emerson Munangagwa has openly admitted that there are a lot of unscrupulous deals that are happening in the mining sector. This is the first time a Zanu-PF politburo member has admitted that things are not handled above board in this money spinning sector led by the self-confessed fabulously rich Mines and Mining Development minister - Obert Mpofu.
The fiery minister made the stunning remarks in a report he tabled before the Zanu PF Central Committee during the just ended Annual National People's Conference held in Bulawayo.
In the said report on National Security on page 6 Chapter 6 under a Sub Heading: Security Situation, third paragraph - he wrote: "Another issue of concern relaters to illicit mining and smuggling of precious metals which continues to be problematic.
"The diamond industry has attracted criminal syndicates from countries in the Middle East and West Africa," he wrote in part.
The minister who has been fingered in dirty and blood diamond deals in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and Zimbabwe also mourned the rise in incidents of parching, rape, human and drug trafficking arguing thus: "Other issues of security concern include continued incidents of poaching, theft of motor vehicles, rape, especially of children and murder," he submitted.
He added that the security forces in the country were on "top" of the situation.
Zanu PF has insisted that all is being done above board in diamond sales. The opposition political parties and other civic society activists have denied this claim arguing that there is a lot that is "shady" in deals especially those that involve diamonds.
