An analyst has claimed that the Zimbabwe Republic Police have endued very bad publicity but there is a need to establish if they are real bad.

Godknows Kudzanayi Mashaireā€ˇ  said Zimbabwe police endured very bad publicity and asked if they are really that bad.

"When it comes to combating crime Zimbabwe police is one of the best in Africa which is evident by the very low rates of homicide, robbery and gun crimes in Zimbabwe.

"Controversy arises only when it comes to political issues because of interference of politicians, the police and state security have to take orders from government officials. Even then how many people are actually killed by the Zimbabwe police, probably even zero per year. Now compare that with the American police for example, where hundreds of teenagers are killed every year," he said.

"Even when it comes to traffic police, because of the system we have in place they have to put up road blocks to inspect vehicles. Up to half of the traffic in Zimbabwe are not roadworthy not necessarily mechanical but also the paperwork, including radio licence. In UK for example every vehicle has to pass a mandatory roadworthiness test every year and cameras exist to check that on most roads which removes the need to for direct contact of drivers with police."

He said bribery is also increased by the fact that our civil servants are underpaid because of the poorly performing economy, most people worldwide would behave the same under those conditions.

"The fines are just $10-20 anyway, the minimum fine in Botswana and South Africa is $50. We exaggerate some of these bad things to gain sympathy from the international community to help us remove Robert Mugabe but often it does not help the situation and the millions of children in schools who look up to us for direction, guidance and inspiration," he said.
