SIX municipal and two Zimbabwe Republic Police officers were Tuesday seriously injured when they were attacked by vendors while on duty in Eastlea, City of Harare said in a statement.

"Six municipal police and two ZRP officers doing duty in Eastlea were today (Tuesday) severely injured when they were waylaid by vendors," said City spokesperson Michael Chideme.

The injured officers are receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

"The injured are receiving medical attention at Parirenyatwa (Group of) Hospitals," said Chideme.

The cops are said to have been deployed to raid banana vendors who had camped at a premise in Eastlea.

"Initial reports indicate that a group of banana vendors had camped at No. 2 Market Street in Eastlea leading to the property owner to make a report to council.

"The municipal police force immediately responded with support from ZRP. Upon arrival at the premises, they were attacked with stones leading to the injuries.

"Even passers-by were caught in the attacks as well as parked and moving vehicles.

The city authorities say they will not be deterred from executing their duties.

"Harare City Council strongly advises members of the informal not to be confrontational when approached by law enforcers.

"Attacking the law enforcement agents will not scare the officers away from their duties but will instead bolden them to ensure all illegal activities are eliminated."
