The District Development Fund (DDF) requires over US$1 million to rehabilitate roads in Matabeleland South province that have been destroyed by heavy rains and floods currently being experienced in various parts of the country.

The heavy rains and widespread flooding that is currently being experienced in the country has resulted in the destruction of key public infrastructure with the state of roads deteriorating rapidly.

DDF Matabeleland South provincial co-coordinator Douglas Dube conceded that poor maintenance practices due to lack of adequate resources has worsened the condition of roads.

As a result over US$1 million is required to rehabilitate DDF's roads as well construct some structures that have been washed away by the rains.

Beitbridge East legislator who is also the Minister of State Security Cde Kembo Mohadi says while the worst affected roads in Beitbridge are state roads, there is need to ensure that DDF is fully funded so as to guarantee continued service provision to the citizens.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development last year channeled resources to improve some roads in the province but the reality of poor road conditions remains.
