Mnangagwa arrives in Geneva

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Geneva, Switzerland for the United Nations Human Rights Periodic Review meeting where Zimbabwe is expected to appear before a full Human Rights Council on Thursday for the adoption of its 2016 review.
Mnangagwa, who is also the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, the Permanent Secretary for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Mrs Virginia Mabhiza and other senior government officials were welcomed at the Geneva International Airport by Zimbabwe's Permanent Representative to the UN and World Trade Organisation (WTO), Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu.
After his arrival, the ambassador briefed the Vice President on the procedures of the adoption and consideration of the outcome of the November 2016 review which will be held this Thursday.
Preliminary meetings and consultations will start tomorrow so that the country is ready to present its views on the recommendations issued on the report it presented in November 2016.
Last year, Zimbabwe presented its national report on measures it has taken to promote, protect and fulfill human rights and it received 260 recommendations and the delegation supported 142, noted 18 and deferred 100 in order to allow further consultations.
The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission and UN agencies that are attending the meeting are expected to make general comments on the review of Zimbabwe.
