Two Zimbabweans based in South Africa, who returned home for the festive holidays, allegedly killed a 20-year-old Mashava man on Christmas Day for refusing to greet them.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tineyi Matake said one of the suspects was in custody while the other was still at large.

Insp Matake said Mitiel Gumburai and Emmanuel Chigumbu spent part of the day at Mashava Business Centre.

They came across Emmanuel Honye (19) and Simbarashe Chirwa (29) who had just returned home from South Africa. They did not exchange pleasantries.

Chigumbu and Gumburai later decided to head home after picking up two prostitutes.

Honye and Chirwa allegedly followed them and demanded formal greetings.

An argument ensued and degenerated into a fist fight. Gumburai allegedly struck Chirwa with a brick while his colleague took to his heels with the women in tow.

It is alleged Honye subsequently stabbed Gumburai six times in the chest and head using a sharp object. Gumburai died after bleeding profusely. A police report was made, leading to Chirwa's arrest.

Insp Matake attributed the incident to alcohol abuse.

He said: "Several crimes are committed when people are under the influence of alcohol.

"The recreational factor of alcohol diminishes when it is used as a means to settle differences.

"Police are available 24 hours a day.

"We have a fully operational public relations department that can help people address differences."
