Rogers Nyandoro has died at the age of 79

VETERAN educationist and mobiliser for guerrillas in Masvingo Province during the liberation struggle Rogers Nyandoro has died at the age of 79, the Herald reported.
Nyandoro died at the Metropolitan Clinic in Harare on Sunday after a protracted fight against prostate cancer.
Family spokesperson Ronald Nyandoro, brother to the late Nyandoro, described him as brave and caring.
"This is evidenced by the courage he had when he mobilised material resources for the fighters at the heart of the struggle," he said.
"He was also caring as evidenced by the number of people he assisted both on the education and political fronts. He did not only help close relatives but everyone who needed help from him."
Retired Air Marshal Henry Muchena said Nyandoro played a major role in assisting guerrillas during the struggle.
"We went to Zaka in 1976 in October and the fighters were not very familiar with the area, but he was there to assist when he was the inspector of schools," Muchena said.
"He assisted when we had comrades injured in the struggle. He would collect medication from Dr Simon Mazorodze. We even sent him to Harare to organise the party. We also worked together after the ceasefire to build party structures."
Politburo member Dzikamai Mavhaire also heaped praises on Nyandoro.
"He was a recruiting officer for us and we worked together for a very long time to the extent that when we were arrested he was also arrested though he was released earlier than us," he said.
"Every mountain that was climbed by liberation fighters in Zaka, Nyandoro was also there. In 1980 when it was time to bring back the guerrillas from the mountains he was there with us.
"No one can talk about war in Gutu without mentioning Nyandoro, no one can talk about education in Gutu without talking about the role Nyandoro played, and he was a leading icon." Mavhaire said
Nyandoro was also instrumental in driving Dr Mazorodze and attending to injured guerrillas.
His son, Dr Munyaradzi Nyandoro said he would be buried on Thursday in Gutu.
"There will be a church service in Gutu at Mpandawana at the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe on Wednesday at 9am," he said.
"Burial will then take place at farm number 304 Vhunjere in Gutu on Thursday at 11am."
Nyandoro is survived by his wife Chipiwa with who he was married for over 50 years.
He leaves behind six children, three boys and three girls, 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mourners are gathered at 354 El Shaddai Road in Helensvale.
