A former prison officer, Collins Mugadza, has been sentenced to 8 years in prison after pleading guilty to theft of a motor vehicle.
In his judgment, the presiding magistrate Mr. William Bhilar said people who steal motor vehicles must not expect any mercy from the courts.
Magistrate Bhilar also considered that Mugadza has no capacity to raise restitution.
It is the State's case that on Christmas Day, Mugadza, who was now working for a Harare businesswoman was asked to clean the vehicle.
It is understood that after the owner of the vehicle left her home, Mugadza took the vehicle and went for a joy ride before being involved in an accident.
It is further alleged that Mugadza was later apprehended on the 27th of December at Show Grounds bus stop.
