Amacimbi expected to rack in $500,000

The Forestry Commission says the harvesting and sale of amacimbi in Matabeleland South province is expected to generate more than half a million dollars this season.

The commission's provincial extension manager Mr Bekezela Tshuma said a total of 400 tonnes of amacimbi have so far been harvested in Gwanda, Beitbridge, Matobo, Bulilima and Mangwe.

Gwanda district has the highest output of 18 000 buckets.

When reporters visited one of the 4 four camps that have been established in Gwanda, buyers were already at hand to purchase the harvests.

Some harvesters said they were cashing in on the lucrative business while others felt short-changed.

Gwanda North legislator Cde Madodana Sibanda said it is imperative for harvesters to b assisted with sourcing lucrative markets so that they get better returns.
