Heal Zimbabwe Trust  has reported that in Mazowe District's ward 12 a ward councillor threatened villagers with the ban from getting food aid if they did not contribute towards the independence celebrations.

The trust said on 6 April 2017, Councillor Night Muzhira sent his secretary to move around the ward announcing that people who fail to pay $1 contributions towards independence celebrations, were going to be denied maize from Ministry of Social Welfare.

"He also announced that on the day of the food aid distribution, he was going to use a list of all people who had paid the money to distribute the food aid," said the trust.

"In Mvurwi ward 28 on 7 April 2017, ward 28  Councilor Vincent Muregwa  deployed ZANU PF youths to move around vending markets in Mvurwi town centre forcing people to pay $2 towards Independence Day commemorations. The youths threatened vendors that if they fail to pay the money, they risk losing their vending markets and have their goods taken away by Council."
