'Kids are the future of Zimbabwe,' says Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe says young people are the future of Zimbabwe and government.

The President was speaking at 37th independence anniversary traditional annual Children's Party at the City Sports Centre in Harare this Monday.

In his address, President Mugabe said there is need to celebrate the tremendous achievements in education on the eve of the 37th independence celebrations.

"The opportunity to mingle with you young people gives me joy. You are the future of Zimbabwe.

"This is the time to celebrate our independence, tomorrow we will be doing just that. I hope you join the festivities tomorrow," said the President.

President Mugabe noted that the beginning of 2017, government introduced a new, updated curriculum which is intended to support the transition from school to work, promote innovation and creativity in the country.

He also revealed that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has commenced the Zimbabwe Schools Water Project, that will see all secondary schools commence agriculture initiatives, including fish farming.

"To date, 45 boreholes have been drilled at secondary schools. The project will move to primary schools once it has been implemented at all the 2500 secondary schools in the country," he said.

President Mugabe commended the teachers for their hard work in the education of children and organising them to attend this year's Children's Party.

"May God bless your teachers, we know they have worked very hard to bring you here, so we want to thank them for their hard work," said Cde Mugabe.

President Mugabe took the opportunity to urge the children to avoid bad habits and to be well-behaved.

"My family and I are thrilled to be with you all at the 37th independence Children's Party. Be a blessing to your parents, your teachers and friends. I wish you all success in your education," he said.

The independence anniversary Children's Party is held annually on the eve of the country's independence where President Mugabe takes time to mingle with school children from the country's 10 provinces.
