Gweru moves to plug water leaks

GWERU City Council has acquired two vehicles to improve its reaction time to reports of leakages and burst water pipes as the local authority moves to curb water losses in the city.

According to a recent report prepared by the council's engineering services department, the vehicles would help improve the local authority reduce the amount of water lost through leakages.

"Gweru city has acquired two vehicles for water pipe bursts and leaks," read part of the report.

"The vehicles will improve on the reaction time by council to attend to incidences of water pipe bursts."

A research carried out three years ago by the local authority revealed that the municipality was losing a lot of treated water through tap and pump leaks.

According to the study, Mambo and Mtapa high-density suburbs recorded the highest number of households wasting water through leakages.

In the past stakeholders have called for city fathers to embark on massive education campaigns to encourage residents to conserve water and develop a culture of reporting water bursts and leaks from pipes and taps.
