The MDC-T official Tapiwa Mashakada has lamented that the ruling Zanu PF is still strong in memories of the liberation struggle which it and PF Zapu executed but very weak in vision to emancipate its people after gaining power from the colonial rule.
He said he is one of those people who are very proud about political independence and the africanization of institutions.
"The attainment of independence was the biggest feat in the 20th century. We are forever grateful to war veterans and their leaders in Zanu and Zapu and the masses of our people who supported the liberation struggle. Indeed we are grateful to the former frontline states led by Tanzania and the progressive world in the east and west that supported the people of Zimbabwe. But 37 years on Zanu pf is still strong on memories but weak on vision. Indeed the legacy of Zanu pf misrule is evident. Unemployment, de-industrialization, deflation, decimation of agriculture, institutional decay, infrastructural deficit, impoverishment of people, corruption, dictatorship and a divided people," he said.
"The list endless. The present does not justify the past. Zanu pf has reproduced and replicated Smith's Command economy or dirigistic policies which have stiffled growth over 3 decades. 37 years after independence we are not proud that a third of our population voted with their feet and are living in the diaspora. After 37 years GDP is below $15 billion? 37 years after independence Zimbabwe's budget is less than that of Vodacom or MTN in South Africa. We can celebrate independence yes but not the legacy of Zanu pf. Zwakana. Sokwanele."
