Cannabis farmer tells court 'I was trying to fend for my family'

A 32-Year-Old Mvurwi cannabis farmer was sentenced to perform community service after he was found with seven plants of dagga in his field.
Layford Mutematsaka appeared before Guruve magistrate Artwel Sanyatwe for cultivating cannabis (mbanje) and pleaded guilty to the charge.
Quizzed on why he was cultivating dagga he told the court that he was unemployed hence cultivating mbanje would give him some income at the end of the season.
"Your worship I am not employed, cultivating mbanje was a surety that at the end of the season I would get something to fend for my family," said Mutematsaka.
The magistrate ordered him to perform 210 hours of community service.
Meanwhile, drug peddling is mushrooming in the country with suspects lamenting that they are into the business due to poverty and unemployment.
