Never try to cross a flooded river!

A man from Lupane will rue the day he attempted to cross a flooded river.

On 2 February this year Kariba Ncube (59) drove a Nissan UD Truck with 10 passengers attempting to cross a flooded river.

He lost control of the vehicle  and it overturned in the middle of the river. Two passengers, Trinity Jubane and Justice Moyo drowned while eight passengers survived.

Ncube appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Ndumo Masuku facing a culpable homicide charge and pleaded guilty.

In his mitigation he said: "I have nine children. Five of them are below 18 years old and I'm the sole bread winner."

He was convicted and sentenced.

Sentencing him Masuku said: "You are a first offender and you are gainfully employed. But you are a careless driver.

Ubusucabanga ukuthi imota yisikepe (You thought the car you were driving is a boat).

"Due to your gross negligent driving you will be imprisoned for 24 months but six months will be suspended on condition that you never commit a similar offence within a period of five years."

Ncube was also banned from driving any type of a vehicle for life.
