DYNAMOS football player Murape Murape was yesterday fined US$50 after being convicted of assault charges when he forcibly took money from a shop assistant.

He will spend 15 days behind bars if he fails to pay the fine before January 31. Murape (31) appeared in court facing allegations of robbery, but Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Olivia Mariga concluded that the footballer could be charged with a competent verdict of assault instead of robbery.

"What is in dispute is whether he took US$100 or US$10 as was being alleged by the complainant," she said.

"The State led evidence from the complainant who told the court that he grabbed US$100, but the accused did not deny taking the money, but disputed the figure.

"The accused can, therefore, be charged with a competent verdict of assault and the charge comes from the grabbing that he did."

Allegations against Murape arose on December 22 last year at around 5.30pm when he was at Fake Dealer Wholesalers in Zengeza 2, Chitungwiza.

Francisca Madondo and her husband own the shop. Murape was in the company of his brother George Murape when they entered the shop to buy a crate of soft drinks.

He paid US$12 and was asked to collect the drinks from the back of the shop.

Two minutes later, Murape and his brother returned inside the shop complaining that the drinks were not cold.
