A TEENAGER has been jailed one year for stealing a car from his employer before getting involved in an accident along Mazowe Road.
Elisha Chimuti, 18, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Sharon Rakafa charged with theft of a motor vehicle.
Initially, he was sentenced to two years imprisonment before one year was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The remaining one year shall be effective.
The State, represented by Daniel Muchimbiri, proved that on October 13 at around 8pm, Chimuti went to Harval Private Limited in Graniteside.
Earlier, he had knocked off duty and gained entry into the office where Hazvinei Kapfunde had left her car keys.
Chimuti stole a bunch of keys which were in the office and went on to unlock the gate of the company.
He stole a Toyota Hilux Pickup truck, blue in colour (registration number AAP 9946) belonging to his employer and drove it out of the company premises.
Chimuti lied to the security guard who was manning the main gate that he was going to buy some food since he was on night duty.
Chimuti drove the car without the consent of the owner along Mazowe Road where he was involved in an accident and he fled from the scene.
Investigations were done which led to Chimuti's arrest and he led the police officers to the recovery of the damaged stolen car along Mazowe road where he had left it.
