The legislator for Buhera South Constituency, Joseph Chinotimba in collaboration with the Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (TUZ) has launched an ambitious programme to train teachers in information communication technologies (ICTs) to enable them to fully implement the new education curriculum.

The basic ICTs training workshop, which brought 173 participants at Muzokomba secondary school, also saw Chinotimba participating in the exercise.

Doubling as the patron of TUZ, Chinotimba said he was compelled to start the project after realising that the new education curriculum is ICT driven and most of the teaching staff were lacking the relevant skills.

He applauded President Robert Mugabe for promoting computerisation and e-learning but noted with concern that most of the donated computers in many schools including those in Buhera South constituency were gathering dust due to lack of ICT skills among the teaching staff.

TUZ is facilitating the training and the programme is targeting teachers who are already implementing the new education curriculum.

Nationally, the training has covered five constituencies.

TUZ President, Mr Timon Tandi noted that ICTs are an integral part of the new education curriculum, highlighting that the union is determined to roll out basic ICT skills training for teachers in all the country's 210 constituencies.

"TUZ has taken a deliberate step to complement government efforts in the implementation of the new curriculum through empowering teachers with ict skills," he said.

The schools inspector for Buhera South, Mr Paidamoyo Dongonda said the government expects all teachers to be ICT compliant and commended Chinotimba for the initiative, saying it will revolutionise the teaching and learning environment in all schools.

Under the programme, 252 teachers have so far received training and certificates in basic ICT skills in the Buhera South, and the best student at the workshop received a computer.
