Street performers fall on hard times in Zimbabwe
10 May 2017 at 14:51hrs | Views
Many street comedians have fallen on hard times as people no longer throw reasonable money at them.
Bulawayo24.com bumped into two male street comedians at Samuriwo shops in Mufakose, Harare, yesterday just before sunset.
The two men demanded a dollar from scores of people who surrounded them to watch their performance but were shocked to receive only 15cents.
They tried to persuade onlookers for more money for more than an hour, but to not avail.
Onlookers who spoke to this reporter said money is difficult to come by these days, thus throwing coins at street theatre is leisure.
"Money is very scarce in Zimbabwe throwing a cent to street theatre is leisure, we need to put food on the table first before giving away change to street performers," he said.
Meanwhile, back in the days comedians like Freddy Manjalima and Mabla 10 of the Jah Prayzah band rose to fame through street theatre.
