A concerned citizen from Harare, Maguta Kutonga has said it is not helpful for people in Matabeleland to blame Shonas for hwat ever reasons and even for the Shonas to hate Ndebelels as that does not resolve the economic crisis bedeviling the nation at the moment.
"I hope my response and comment will find you in good health. My heart bleeds when I imagine some things that are happening in Zimbabwe today. A lot of things went wrong from 1980. Many things are still going wrong even today. It is one of the reasons so many Zimbabweans are living in foreign countries. We must really go to the root of the problem before we blame the Shona girl working on the till in OK Supermarket," said Kutonga.
"Before I go any further, I must say blaming the Shona or hating the Ndebele will not help us fight our common enemy whom we all know. Both Shona and Ndebele are children of Zimbabwe and we must unite. There are some dynamics that we must understand. The population distribution. I think you will agree with me that the Shona outnumber the Ndebele people approximately 10 to1.Using this approximate ratio, Ndebeles may form only 10 percent of the population."
The concerned citizen said this national ratio may also reflect in companies, employment, university enrollment, churches and in many spheres of life.
"If you visit the army and the police, you will see the same representations at play. Let us stop fighting one another on tribal grounds. Do not evict that Shona Headteacher from your area because she happens to come from Mrewa. Let us unite. Personally I believe the greatest leader Zimbabwe ever produced is our father Papa Joshua Nkomo.Chibwechitedza. A Shona name they gave him, which means,"The slippery rock". Let us all emulate the legacy left behind by this illustrious son of our land. His leadership was accepted from Zambezi to Limpopo, Victoria Falls to Mutare.Let us emulate this leadership that is not questionable," he said.
"Leadership beyond tribalism, leadership beyond street and/or village politics. Let Zimbabwe produce leaders above petty selfish matters. Then there is going to be enough for everybody regardless of which tribe you are or which region you come from. It is the dearth of good leadership in Zimbabwe today that has given rise to corruption, tribalism, regionalism, mukomaism, and all the evil -ism- you can think of. Let us unite brothers and sisters. Let us rise beyond village politics to national politics. Let us mobilise from every corner and conscientise the people about the evil that has befallen Zimbabwe. Be you Shona, be you Ndebele, the colour of the blood is the same. I love you all. Let us continue to engage one another. The solution is with us."
