Local companies from Zvishavane and Mberengwa have raised US$102 000 for the rehabilitation of Nkankezi bridge that was destroyed by the recent Cyclone Dineo which affected some parts of the country.
Nkankezi bridge in Filabusi was not spared by the recent cyclonic rains which affected parts of the country as the bridge was swept away rendering access to and from Zvishavane and Bulawayo impassable.
Following its destruction a number of companies led by Mimosa Mining Company raised US$102 000 to rehabilitate the bridge.
Guest of honour at the handover of the donation in Harare, Minister of Mines and Mining Development Walter Chidhakwa commended the companies for the kind gesture saying it is critical for companies to develop communities in their areas of operations.
Chief Ngungubane who led the chiefs delegation from Mberengwa and Zvishavane at the handover ceremony commended the platinum miners and other stakeholders for remembering the community.
Mimosa Mining Company executive chairperson Mr Winston Chitando noted the destroyed bridge was affecting economic activities including the operations of companies in the area.
The intervention to construct Nkankezi bridge comes at a time when government is appealing for the corporate sector and development partners to contribute towards rehabilitation of roads and bridges destroyed by the Cyclone Dineo rains.
