TWO friends have been hauled to court on allegations of extorting $1200.

Tauya Muzivi Mushangwe and Arnold Moses Ojesi have been granted $100 bail and will be back in court on June 8 on routine remand.

Mushangwe is reported to be a member of the Central Intelligence Organisation and Ojesi an accountant at Sanctuary Insurance Company Limited both stationed in Harare.

The Country Director of Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative (REPSSI), a non-governmental organisation that promotes social services such as health and education, Sibusisiwe Marunda decided to undertake a project to cater for deprived children in Mashonaland West Province.

REPSSI was to undergo a vetting process before being allowed to offer their services to the above-mentioned province.

Mushangwe was tasked to vet and clear the organisation.

It is alleged that during the vetting process, Mushangwe approached Marunda and informed her that her organisation was not eligible to carry out its project in Chinhoyi.

He is further alleged to have demanded $1200 as a bribe so that the organisation could be cleared.

Marunda then reported the matter to the police who then set up a trap for Mushangwe.

On May 8, a trap team comprising of six detectives from CID Commercial Crimes Division were tasked to execute a trap using 25×$20 notes.

At around 7pm, the trap team held a meeting with Marunda at Long Cheng Plaza where she contacted Mushangwe and informed him that she had been delayed in a meeting and would give him the $1200 he had requested the following day.

However, Mushangwe is reported to have insisted that Marunda meet him on the same day at Divaris Shopping Centre in Belvedere.

The trap team along with Marunda proceeded to the shopping centre in separate vehicles and strategically positioned themselves.

It is reported that both Mushangwe and Ojesi were at the scene.

Marunda is reported to have gotten out of her vehicle and met up with Mushangwe who had also alighted from his own vehicle, a black Volkswagen Passat.

The two started walking together towards Ojesi who was seated in his vehicle, a Toyota Mark II.

On the way, Mushangwe was handed the trap money and he is reported to have handed it to Ojesi.

The trap team is then reported to have pounced on Ojesi in a bid to recover the trap money and to arrest the two accused persons.

However, Mushangwe is alleged to have sensed danger and alerted Ojesi to drive away immediately which he did.

The trap team arrested Mushangwe at the scene and then pursued Ojesi who they managed to apprehend at his work place.

The trap money was then recovered from his car.

The total value extorted is $1200.

Harare magistrate Barbara Chimboza presided over the matter whilst Sebastian Mutizirwa represented the State.
