Police yesterday detained two Daily News journalists who were covering the fracas that occurred in First Street between vendors and members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police.

Xolisani Ncube and photographer Annie Mpalume were among four journalists who were caught up in the cross fire, the Daily News reported.

Police details summoned the four journalists who included those from the state media.

Upon arrival at the First Street police post, journalists from The Herald were quickly released and the police continued interrogating the two Daily News journalists.

The police ordered Mpalume to delete pictures she had taken, while Ncube, who had left his press card, was detained only to be released after the intervention of the company lawyer Charles Kwaramba and the newspaper's editors.

The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) also commendably wrote a letter confirming that indeed Ncube was a journalist.

Senior police officers are also said to have ordered the overzealous junior officers to release Ncube.

At Harare Police Station, cops questioned Ncube on the story he was going to write and who he was going to blame for the anarchy.
