EMBATTLED Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) Commissioner-General, Gershem Pasi, has terminated his contract with Zimra citing a broken relationship following 7 months of investigations into allegations of corruption and gross misconduct.
Pasi said he does not believe that he would want to continue to be of service to 'my country under such circumstances.'
He has refused to 'chlorinate' the disciplinary action process.
In a leaked letter dated May 22, addressed to Zimra, board chairperson, Willia Bonyongwe, Pasi demanded timeous payment of his package although it remains to be seen if the board would pay him before completing its investigations.
Pasi still maintains his innocence, rather accusing the audit team of incompetence.
"My employer has without just or lawful cause preferred unfounded charges against me. The charges ring hollow being based as they are upon an incompetent Audit report prepared by Auditors who abdicated their most basic functions and responsibilities," said Pasi.
Pasi was last year suspended after an audit into the goings-on at ZIMRA exposed massive corruption, fraud, and poor corporate governance and tax evasion scandals.
He challenged his suspension on the grounds that the Zimra board had no authority to suspend him and to charge him. He was also challenging the forensic audit process and that the charges levelled against him under the Zimra code of conduct instead of the national code.
"All these issues were dealt with in the High Court, which ruled that the board could suspend and charge him, and that the forensic audit process was proper. The judge also ruled that he should be charged under the Zimra code of conduct. So now the hearing is underway and is progressing well," Bonyongwe said.
