A 35-YEAR-OLD Mutoko man struck and killed his father with a pestle after accusing him of possessing goblins.
Tongai Makoni, of Katsvairo Village under Chief Nechombo, has since surrendered himself to the police and is expected to appear in court soon answering to charges of murdering his father, Kezias Katsvairo (age not given), after accusing him of practicing witchcraft that was causing misfortunes in his life.
Efforts to get a comment from Mashonaland East Province police were fruitless yesterday.
Information gathered by this paper is that on May 26 at around 1800hrs, Makoni arrived home from Chidye business centre and started quarrelling with his father accusing him of possessing goblins.
It is reported that in a rage, he picked a stone and struck his father once on the head after which he fell down.
The accused then took a pestle and struck Katsvairo thrice on the head while he was still lying on the ground, killing him instantly.
After the heinous act, Makoni fled from the scene before surrendering himself to a member of the neighbourhood watch committee the next day, who took him to Makosa Police Station. He was then arrested by the police while the deceased's body was conveyed to the Mutoko District Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
