THE Bulawayo City Council is set to rehabilitate 28 public toilets around the city, making them gender and disability friendly.
The council's senior public relations officer, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu, said the city had 85 public toilets of which 12 were being leased out.
"The newly rehabilitated toilet blocks will be gender and disability inclusive and where possible will include the provision of facilities to cater for people with disability including wheelchair ramps, hand rails and disabled cubicles," she said.
"This work will be carried out as a component of the Bulawayo Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (BWSSIP) which is mainly funded by the African Development Bank."
The toilet blocks which will be rehabilitated are distributed throughout the city - in the CBD, high density and low density suburbs. She said the cost of the project will be determined by the contract given to the successful bidder.
"Tenders for the rehabilitation of 28 toilet blocks were issued recently on 21 May 2017 and the tender submission deadline is 20 June 2017. The rehabilitation cost will be determined by the contract awarded to the successful bidder."
The project runs from 2016-2019.
Mrs Mpofu said: "Following procurement protocols and timelines we expect a start date in August 2017 and the duration of the project will depend on the schedule of works which is proposed by the successful bidder."
