A TOUR at Morton Jaffray Water Works was temporarily interrupted by a snake which was in one of the rooms at the large facility.
It was during the tour which was organised by the Harare Water Department that the intruder, believed to be a puff adder, was seen neatly resting on the floor in the filtration room. Officials and journalists stopped the tour to look at the reptile while some took pictures.
Despite the noise of the water system in the room, the snake remained motionless. Harare Water Director Engineer Hosea Chisango said snakes are a common feat. at MP owing to its locality.
"Morton Jaffray is away from many buildings, it's in the forest so we are bound to see snakes here.
"This is not the first time to see such reptiles, they are common. However, we take all necessary precautions to makes sure that our employees are safe.
"When we have such kinds of situations we alert the National Parks and they will come and capture them.
"Some of the precautionary measures we have made here is that there is proper lighting in our rooms, just like you saw in that room, there is so much lighting," he said.
He added that 'because of where MJ is, we cannot avoid these snakes.
"Let me also say it on record that we have never had any incidence of an employee who was attacked by the snakes, no one has ever been bitten," said Eng Chisango.
One council employee said that in the MJ yard there is a place where a large python has stayed for a long time
"There is large python which we have in this yard.
"When the Chinese guys (contractors) came here, we had a problem with them as they wanted to kill it and eat
"But we stopped them," said the employee.
As the tour continued, the snake remained in the filtration room.
