A MEMBER of Parliament from Matabeleland South Province is at the centre of an abortion storm amid revelations that he allegedly sought the services of a city doctor to terminate the pregnancy of his younger brother's minor daughter so that she could continue with school.

The legislator whose name is being withheld to protect the girl who is a pupil at one of the popular boarding schools in Plumtree allegedly coerced the girl to abort so as to also cover up the offence after she was impregnated by a relative.

The pregnancy was reportedly four months old.

The accusations levelled against the legislator have since gone viral on social media networking site - WhatsApp.

The MP is however, disputing the accusations. He said it's a smear campaign by his enemies to tarnish his political image.

"I don't want to hear about those allegations. I am really cross with people spreading those rumours and I don't want to comment about them. What I can tell you is that it is a smear campaign designed to tarnish my image as a politician," the MP tersely said.

According to a source close to the family, the matter had also divided the family with some members contemplating reporting it to the police.

The matter reportedly came to light after the MP's wife — a lecturer at one of the State universities discovered some blood stains in the room where the girl was accommodated after the alleged abortion.

When she confronted the girl, she revealed everything that had transpired and the enraged wife is alleged to have phoned her husband's sister who is in South Africa notifying her about the issue.

"The MP's sister out of anger she informed other relatives who said the matter should be reported to the police.

"What made him (MP) to compel the girl to terminate the pregnancy is she was impregnated by her aunt's son who she was staying with at their rural home. He also confided to the girl that it was the only way she could continue with school," said a source who preferred anonymity for fear of victimisation.
