Rapists falls asleep at the scene of the crime after raping prostitute

A Gweru man, Tanaka Mangena (25) who allegedly raped a self-confessed prostitute literally surrendered his freedom when he immediately fell asleep just after committing the offence, police have said.

Police said the suspect, Mangena allegedly grabbed by force a 23-year-old prostitute who was canvassing for clients outside a nightclub in Mkoba Village Six and dragged her to a secluded place where he raped the woman twice.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Chademana confirmed the incident that happened on Wednesday at about 1am at Takarangana Nightclub.

He said on the fateful day, the complainant, who is a commercial sex worker, was standing outside the nightclub looking for clients.

Insp Chademana said the suspect, who was drinking beer at the same nightclub where the complainant was operating from, took the woman by surprise as he suddenly grabbed her without any warning.

"While outside Takarangana Nightclub, the lady of the night was approached by the suspect Tanaka Mangena. He then held her hand firmly and dragged her to the nearby TM Supermarket complex where he then proceeded to rape her twice," he said.

Insp Chademana said Mangena immediately went on to take a nap at the scene of crime.

He said the 23-year-old complainant quickly dashed to a nearby police station to file rape charges against Mangena.

"Police attended to the scene and discovered Mangena still lying fast asleep at the scene of the crime, leading to his subsequent arrest," said Insp Chademana.

"He is still in custody assisting the police carry out their investigations into the matter," he said.
