A 26-YEAR-OLD Nyazura man raped a 78-year-old granny from the same area once before her grandson rescued her by attacking the assailant with an iron bar.

Nicholas Hove was caught doing the ungodly act by the granny's grandson (15) who hit him twice on the back with an iron bar. He was forced to flee from the scene by the sudden turn of events.

Police said Hove was later arrested and was assisting them with investigations.

Police said at around 11pm, Hove broke the bedroom door and gained entry into a room where the granny and her grandson were asleep.

"He raped her once and as he was busy committing the offence, the grandson went outside, took an iron bar and hit Hove twice on the back. He fled from the scene.

"The grandson positively identified Hove because of his dreadlocked hair which subsequently led to his arrest," said Manicaland provincial police spokesman, Inspector Leonard Chabata.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old girl was last Wednesday blindfolded, force-marched into a bush and raped once by two unknown male adults in Marange.

Insp Chabata said the girl (name withheld) was coming from a neighbouring village where she had gone to look for employment.

"She met the two adults on her way back around 5:30pm and was blindfolded and force-marched into a nearby bush. The duo forced her to lie on the ground. One of the accused raped her once, while the other one was holding her hands. They eventually vanished. The girl made a report to the police and investigations are in progress," said Insp Chabata.
