ZCTU breakaway factions calls for a crippling civil servants strike

A break-away faction of the ZCTU has appealed to the workers in the private sector to join civil servants in a crippling strike. Lovemore Matombo, who leads the faction, said joining the civil servants in their planned week-long strike which starts tomorrow, was in the best interests of all workers.
Matombo said it makes sense to strike for wages in line with the Poverty Datum Line (PDL) currently pegged at $546.
The government has called for a meeting with the Apex Council on Wednesday to discuss salaries and working conditions, but civil servants have dismissed it as a "delaying tactic".
The unions Friday said they will press ahead with their 5-day strike starting on Monday.
Meanwhile, the MDC-T says it feared that Zanu-PF had hijacked the civil servants strike scheduled for today and was using some union leaders to attack the party and some of its ministers instead of addressing the concerns of the civil servants as a united government.
Apex Council chairperson, Tendayi Chikowore, said civil servants were pressing ahead with the 5-day strike despite overtures made by the government for a meeting on Wednesday this week.
