Human rights activists, Patson Dzamara and Makomborero Haruziviishe, who were convicted of obstructing the course of justice a fortnight ago, yesterday successfully applied for a stay of sentence pending appeal at the High Court.

Dzamara and Haruziviishe were sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment by magistrate, Josephine Sande, who then suspended the whole jail term on condition of the pair completing 315 hours of community service.

The magistrate ruled that the staying of community service would not prejudice the State, since Dzamara and Haruziviishe would continue with their sentences in the event that their application failed at the High Court.

The magistrate's ruling came after the duo's lawyer, Obey Shava filed a notice of appeal, arguing that the court had grossly misdirected itself and erred in convicting the two.
