President Robert Mugabe is reported to have put his name on a line of clothing in an attempt to reach young, fashion-savvy voters.
The clothing label, House of Gushungo, that made headlines in December 2011, finally has a venue where you can walk in and purchase apparel with President Robert Mugabe's signature.
House of Gushungo clothing line will use the 87-year-old Mugabe's signature as a logo, and will print it on t-shirts and other garments designed for men, women and children.
The line will apparently include everything from formalwear to winter coats, hats and everything in between. And all of it is designed to be a tribute to Mugabe, who has been in control of the country since 1980.
"We decided to come up with something that is long lasting, something that will last forever and in honour of our President," said Nicholas Munyonga, who runs the line.
The House of Gushungo fashion stable is located at Corner 7th and Josiah Chinamano and is run by Yedu Nesu Holdings. The company is not new in the fashion arena, having been founded in 2010. Then the label's clothing was only accessible to those that attended the ZANU-PF congress and conferences but now anyone can walk in a buy their clothes.
With the designs created in Singapore and the clothing produced in China, Allan Mapisa, the marketing manager, argues that there is no Zimbabwe factory yet because the House of Gushungo wants to maintain quality and guard against imitations. The high standards that the House of Gushungo claims to adhere to are also the reason why they do not have a shop yet within the city.
The Gushungo collection at the moment is made up of affordable t-shirts, golf shirts, man's shirts, jackets and tracksuits. Though the options are limited for the ladies and for those under the age of 12, Mapisa says they shall be increasing their collection in the near future.
