MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu has added his voice in mourning the legend South African musician Ray Phiri who died this week.

Phiri died due to cancer of the lungs.

"We mourn the passing on of Afro - jazz maestro,Ray Chikapa Enock Phiri.Ray Phiri of the much celebrated musical outfit,Stimela, was a supremely talented Afro - jazz vocalist and instrumentalist.A towering artist of immense talent,Ray Phiri will be fondly remembered for his unique vocal and dancing skills that made him a household name throughout Africa and beyond," Gutu said.

"Ray Phiri's hit songs such as Phinda Mzala and Whispers in the Deep were consumate and exquisite.Personally,I feel privileged to have attended some of the concerts staged by Ray Phiri & Stimela in Harare some few decades ago.Together with other legendary Afro - jazz outfits such as the group Sankomota fronted by the late Frank Leepa and Tsepo Tshola,Stimela ranks amongst some of the finest and accomplished musical bands to come out of the African continent."

Gutu said Ray Phiri was a Pan Africanist who exuded pride, confidence and triumph in virtually all his musical compositions.

"His collaboration with Paul Simon of the Graceland fame certainly raised the bar for him to another level. May Ray Phiri's departed soul rest in eternal peace," he said.
